April 2025's Featured Sermon of the Month

It Looked Like Checkmate...

In an art gallery somewhere in Europe hangs a famous painting titled “Checkmate.” It shows a young man locked in a desperate game of chess with the devil himself. The young man looks defeated. The devil smiles with smug confidence. It seems the game is over — the young man’s king is trapped.

But one day, a world-class chess champion visited the gallery. He studied the painting intently... and then said something unexpected:“ There’s something wrong with this painting. The king still has one more move.”

What looked like certain defeat was actually just... unfinished.

And that’s the heart of the resurrection. When Jesus lay dead in the tomb, it looked like the story was over. But the King still had one more move.

  1. Jesus IS the resurrection and the life.

(John 11:25) When Martha mourned her brother Lazarus, Jesus didn’t just comfort her with future promises. He said, “I am the resurrection and the life.”The power over death wasn’t just something Jesus offered — it was something He is. Where Jesus is, life is.

  1. The raising of Lazarus was a preview of Jesus' greater resurrection.

Lazarus was raised to life, but he would one day die again.Jesus' resurrection, however, was final and eternal. It proved that death could not hold Him — and it will not hold those who trust in Him.

  1. The resurrection offers both spiritual and physical life.

(Ephesians 2:1) Without Christ, we are spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. But through the resurrection, Jesus makes dead souls alive — offering freedom, hope, and a new beginning.

  1. Believing in Christ is the only pathway to eternal life.

(Romans 10:9-10) Church membership, good works, baptism — none of these can save.Salvation is by faith alone: believing that Jesus died and rose again for you.The question Jesus asked Martha is still the most important question today:"Believest thou this?"

  1. Freedom comes when we encounter the living Christ.

Just as Lazarus was unbound from his grave clothes, Jesus sets us free from sin, shame, and fear.He is still calling out today: “Loose him, and let him go.”Resurrection life is not just about life after death — it is the power to live free today.

  1. No matter how hopeless it seems, the King still has another move.

When it looked like death had won, Jesus rose. When sin seemed unbreakable, grace overwhelmed it.When the grave was sealed, the stone rolled away.In every circumstance where we feel trapped, our King still moves.

As Pastor asked us:“Believest thou this?”

Friend, it’s not enough to know about Jesus. It’s not enough to admire Him from a distance. It’s not even enough to be a “good person.”You must believe — personally, deeply — that He is the Christ, the Son of God, and trust Him for your salvation.

If you're tired, broken, or burdened by sin...If you wonder if your story could ever change...Remember: The King still has one more move.
