The Power to Change Your Life | Psalm 19 | Harvest Baptist Church

September 2024's Featured Sermon of the Month

In this month’s sermon, Bro. John Russell delivered a powerful message on the life-changing impact of scripture. With Pastor Jaime out of town attending a conference, Bro. John drew on Psalm 19 to remind us how God’s word provides wisdom, renews the soul, and helps navigate the challenges of life.

Faith That Can Move Mountains (And Change your life)

Bro. John began by explaining how faith can completely transform the way we face obstacles. Drawing from Psalm 19:1, which says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork," he reminded us that God’s power is limitless. Just as He created the universe, God can overcome any challenge we face.

"Some see a mountain, but faith sees a mountain moved."

Faith is what allows us to trust in God’s ability to move mountains in our lives. Whether we are facing financial struggles, health issues, or personal hardships, faith in God’s promises helps us see beyond the difficulty. Bro. John emphasized that faith isn’t about avoiding challenges, but rather about trusting God to lead us through them.

Restoring the Soul Through Scripture

"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple." – Psalm 19:7

Next, Bro. John focused on how God’s word restores our souls. Much like Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, the Bible has the power to rebuild and restore our lives when we are broken. Through the regular reading of scripture, we can experience true spiritual renewal and strength.

He explained that life often leaves us feeling weary, but the word of God revives us. Bro. John emphasized the importance of not just reading the Bible but meditating on it daily. This consistent engagement with scripture allows God to refresh our spirits and give us the strength to face each new day.

"The Bible is more than a book; it is the restoration of the soul."

Just as Psalm 19:7 promises, God’s word is "perfect," and it has the power to convert our souls. Bro. John encouraged the congregation to immerse themselves in scripture, finding peace and renewal in God’s unchanging word.

Practical Wisdom for Everyday Life

"The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." – Psalm 19:8

Bro. John also explained how the Bible offers practical wisdom for everyday life. The scriptures address a wide range of topics, including relationships, finances, health, and more. Proverbs is filled with advice on handling money wisely, avoiding debt, and living generously. The New Testament teaches us how to cultivate forgiveness, patience, and love in our relationships.

He reminded the congregation that God’s word is timeless. Even though the Bible was written thousands of years ago, its teachings remain relevant and applicable to the challenges we face today. When we apply biblical principles to our daily decisions, we experience God’s guidance in every aspect of life.

Bro. John encouraged everyone to approach the Bible as a guide, not only for spiritual matters but also for practical decisions. Whether we are struggling with a major life choice or simply trying to live with integrity each day, God’s word provides the wisdom we need.

The Importance of a Teachable Spirit

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." – James 1:22

In order for the Bible to truly change our lives, Bro. John emphasized that we must have a teachable spirit. It is not enough to simply hear the word of God; we must be willing to apply it to our lives. Bro. John reminded the congregation that God values a heart that is open to His teachings.

He used James 1:22 to encourage the congregation to be doers of the word. He explained that a teachable heart leads to transformation. When we approach scripture with humility and a desire to learn, we open ourselves to the transformative power of God’s word.

Bro. John also stressed that this teachable spirit requires humility. We must be willing to let go of our preconceived notions and allow God to reshape our thinking through His word.

Call to Action

Bro. John concluded by urging the congregation to commit to regular scripture reading. He recommended starting with the Gospel of John, Proverbs, and Psalms. He emphasized that whether you are seeking salvation, spiritual renewal, or guidance for a specific decision, the answer can be found in God’s word.

He extended an invitation to anyone who has not yet accepted Christ to come forward and receive the gift of salvation, reminding them of the promise of John 6:37: "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out."

Bro. John also encouraged those who may feel burdened or spiritually weary to come forward for prayer and rededication. He assured them that God is always ready to restore their soul and guide them back to a life rooted in faith.

Conclusion

This sermon from Bro. John Russell serves as a powerful reminder that the Bible has the power to change lives. Through faith, scripture restores our souls, provides wisdom for daily living, and helps us overcome life’s greatest challenges. By committing to daily engagement with God’s word, we can experience the life-changing power of scripture.

"The word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword" – Hebrews 4:12

Start today by making scripture reading a part of your daily routine, and watch as God transforms your life.
